Pinkerton’s Run Abandoned Mine Treatment

OVERVIEW

The Parks Foundation is continuing restoration efforts in Settlers Cabin Park through a major environmental restoration project. This work will treat two acid mine drainage (AMD) discharges that impair Pinkerton’s Run, restore 1.9 acres of land impacted by historic mine subsidence and complete the Panhandle Connector Trail.

Pinkertons Run is a subwatershed located within the Lower Chartiers Creek watershed. The watershed encompasses approximately 1,600 acres and lies almost entirely within the park’s boundaries, making its health critical to the overall ecological condition of Settlers Cabin Park.

This project builds on the Park Foundation’s Pinkerton’s Run Abandoned Mine Drainage Clean-Up and Streambank Stabilization Project completed in 2022, which included construction of a passive AMD treatment system at one of the park’s most polluting discharges (AMD-4). These efforts will dramatically improve water quality, restore damaged landscapes, enhance wildlife habitat and expand safe recreational opportunities for park visitors.

This work is rooted in years of ecological study and planning. The Parks Foundation’s Ecological Assessments and Action Plans and ongoing Stream Assessments have provided a detailed understanding of the park’s natural resources, water conditions and restoration priorities. These studies ensure that improvements are strategic, sustainable and designed for long-term success.
