OVERVIEW
Allegheny County completed a total renovation of the popular South Park Fairgrounds Oval parking lot in December 2021. The Parks Foundation received a Growing Greener Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to design a green parking lot to replace the old asphalt paved parking lot. This new aesthetically pleasing solution features sustainable elements such as a minimal footprint, storm water management, drain-through paving surface, concrete boardwalks and native plants. It was designed to attract visitors and encourage them to linger on benches under the shade of the promenade trees. This innovative green design will provide educational and demonstration opportunities for the value of rain gardens and stormwater management practices.
