The lower and middle lakes will receive landscape tree plantings upgrades to create a more welcoming and sustainable experience for all visitors. This project was a recommendation from the Ecological Assessment and Action Plan for Deer Lakes Park and includes the planting of a combination of approximately 40 conifer, shade and flowering trees along the walking loop and adjacent parking areas. These new trees will provide much-needed shade, improving comfort and safety for walkers, joggers, dogs and fishers while encouraging year-round use of the trail. These trees will also provide critical habitat for birds, mammals and pollinators, while their roots and leaf litter will enhance soil stability and biodiversity.
Beyond visitor experience, the project will deliver lasting ecological benefits. Existing trees in Deer Lakes Park currently prevent an estimated 2.52 million gallons of stormwater runoff each year, resulting in more than $22,000 in annual cost savings for the local municipalities. These newly planted trees will provide critical habitat for birds, mammals and pollinators, while their roots and leaf litter will enhance soil stability and biodiversity. As the trees mature, their shade will help cool stormwater before it enters the lakes, supporting healthier aquatic ecosystems throughout the park.
