FAQ: Park ’til Dark

Tree Planting supported by the Allegheny County Park Rangers

About: Join us for a volunteer tree planting with the Allegheny County Park Rangers from 9am-12pm as we plant 100 trees near the Dek Hockey Rink.

Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Difficulty: Intermediate, moderate physical exercise

Where: Park at the North Park Swimming Pool Parking Lot. Please walk behind the Dek Hockey Rink, where we will meet for instructions from Park Rangers and plant trees. Coffee and donuts provided for registrants!

Bring: Please bring water, wear weather appropriate clothes and closed toe shoes. 

 

Tour & Kids Crafts at the North Park Arboretum

About: Join the Pine Creek Land Conservation Trust for a 1 hour program that is fun for the whole family, includes an introduction to the Arboretum’s history and restoration project, and a story book walk. This will include a short walk (1/3 miles) including tree and wildflower identification, a demonstration of how large plants such as buckthorn are removed, and a scavenger hunt and art project for children!

Time: 9:00 – 10:00am

Difficulty: Beginner

Where: You may park along Old Babcock Rd or at any of the parking areas at the intersection of Wildwood Rd and Old Babcock Rd. Please meet at the Arboretum.

Equipment: Please wear weather appropriate attire as this activity is outdoors.

 

Family Stroller Strides Class

About: Stroller Strides is a 60-minute total-body workout with strength, cardio, and core training, all while engaging the little ones in a stroller! You’ll leave class feeling strong, empowered, connected, and energized—no matter your stage of parenthood. For this Family Stroller Strides, any partner (your spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or whomever!) is invited to join you!

Time: 11:00am – 12:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Where: Please park at the North Park Boathouse and meet at the Latrobe Shelter and Playground on Tennis Court Rd.

Equipment: Water, stroller or wagon, and weather appropriate attire.

 

Spooktacular Costume Family Bike Ride

About: Join us for a spooktacular Family-Friendly Halloween Bike Ride and Costume Dress-Up on Tennis Court Road near the Boathouse from 12-1 pm! Dress up in your favorite Halloween costumes and bring your bikes for a fun-filled ride. Stick to our blocked off section on Tennis Court Road, or take the gang for an adventure around the North Park Lake Loop (5+ miles). We’ll be handing out candy to all the little ghosts and goblins, and there will be plenty of opportunities to take photos to capture the Halloween magic. Whether you’re a witch on wheels, a superhero on a cycle, or a pirate pedaling, this event is sure to be a frightfully good time for the whole family. Don’t forget to bring your helmets and your Halloween spirit!

Time: 12:00 – 1:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner. Please note bike rides are self-led at your own pace and distance.

Where: Please park at the North Park Boathouse and look for us at Harmony Shelter.

Equipment: Water, bike (or any form of non-motorized wheels), helmet, and your BEST costume! 

 

Nature Journaling Program

About: Feeling out of touch with the world around you? Get away from the screens and stressors of today’s world and explore how to reconnect with nature through Nature Journaling. Learn how to slow down, embrace your natural curiosity, and let nature melt your stress away on this .75 mile journey. Bring your own journal or make a simple one with us. Please note that this program is best suited for adults and children ages 9 and up, although all are welcome to attend.

Time: 12:30 – 2:30pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Where: Please park at the Latodami Nature Center and meet in the barn.

Equipment: Journal, writing utensil, water, and weather appropriate attire.

 

Parks Foundation Project Tour

About: Join our Executive Director, Joey-Linn Ulrich, and Project Manager, Nicole Oeler, for an approx. 1 mile walking tour through some of our projects in North Park along Tennis Court Road. Learn all about how our work makes North Park a better place for visitors and wildlife alike.

Time: 1:00 – 2:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Where: Parking is available at the North Park Boathouse. Please meet at Rochester Shelter. For closer parking, please park at the former GoApe site, but please note that Tennis Court Road will be closed temporarily at the Boathouse entrance and can only be accessed by vehicle from Walter Road.

Equipment: Water and weather appropriate attire.

 

Mindful Meditation

About: Join Awaken Pittsburgh for mindful moments in nature. In this session we will explore practices that invite us to slow down, ground ourselves and release stress. We will be guided in beginning level practices such as guided meditations, exploring our senses and mindful walking. All are welcome.

Time: 2:00 – 3:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Where: Please park and meet at the Gold Star Shelter.

Equipment: Consider bringing something comfortable to sit on, such as a towel, blanket or yoga mat as we spread out in the grass nearby. In the event of rain we will sit under the shelter.

 

Latodami Open Barn

About: Come visit the Latodami Nature Center barn to check out wildlife displays, participate in activities, chat with a Naturalist and enjoy some autumnal treats on us!

Time: 2:30 – 5:30pm

Power Hike

About: Join Beat the Blues Wellness Adventure Community on a rigorous 4.2 mile hike through North Park. Learn more about Beat the Blues Community and see just one of the many examples of what kind of hikes your park has to offer. If you wish, join us afterwards at Pour at the Park (details below) to enjoy community, drinks, food and music! Upon arrival at the hike registered participants will receive a special $10 off discount for a ticket at the door.

Time: 3:00 – 5:00pm

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

Where: Please park and meet at the Roosevelt Shelter.

Equipment: Water, weather appropriate activewear, and comfortable hiking shoes.

 

Pour at the Park hosted by the Allegheny County Parks Foundation

About: The day will be capped with Pour at the Park, our annual fundraiser where you can try tastings from local breweries and food vendors while listening to live music! Tickets can be purchased at pouratthepark.com and benefit your county parks.

Time: 5:30 – 8:30PM

Where: Event at the North Park Lodge with Parking at the North Park Ice Rink and Olympia Shelter. Check in and shuttles at North Park Ice Rink.
