FAQ: Park ’til Dark

Tree Planting supported by Allegheny County Park Rangers, 10 Million Trees for PA, and Public Lands

About: Join us for a volunteer tree planting with the Allegheny County Park Rangers from 9am-12pm as we plant 300 trees in North Park from 10 Million Trees for PA. Public Lands will be on site with refreshments for Volunteers!

Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Difficulty: Intermediate, moderate physical exercise

Where: Park and meet at Pigeon Shelter.

Bring: Please bring water and wear weather appropriate clothes and closed toed shoes. 

 

Fall Foliage Hike

About: Join Latodami Nature Center on a tour of some of the specimen trees in the North Park Arboretum (founded 1941) then hike up to the old Tupelo Shelter for a colorful view, learning about the park’s history and the science behind fall foliage along the way. This hike is 1 mile and rated as moderate with a steep hill climb.

Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm

Difficulty: Intermediate

Place: Participants can park along Wildwood Road next to the 8th Division Veterans Memorial/Demonstration Gardens  and our group will meet up in the lawn in front of the Grant Shelter.

Bring: Please bring water and wear weather appropriate clothes and closed toed shoes. 

 

Love Your Lake

About: Stop by North Park’s Spillway Boat Launch to visit the booth and learn how to keep your lake clean and enjoyable! Join Latodami Nature Center Naturalist and experts from the Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension to talk about ways you can limit the introduction of invasive plants and animals and improve water quality. Chat with the experts about your favorite inhabitants of North Park Lake and check out wildlife displays from Carnegie Museum. Latodami will have give away items!

Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm

Place: A booth will be set up at North Park’s Spillway Boat Launch

 

Family Fishing

About: Join the PA Fish and Boat Commission at North Park Lake for an afternoon of family fishing! All equipment will be provided.

Time: 11:00am – 2:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Place: Participants can park and meet at Kolich Shleter on Lake Shore Drive.

Bring: Please wear weather appropriate attire.

 

Park ’til Dark Marketplace

About: Drop-in anytime during noon – 4pm for the Park ’til Dark Marketplace hosted by the Parks Foundation. Plenty of local artists, crafters, small businesses, and food and beverage vendors will be on site!

Time: 12:00 – 4:00pm

Place: Please park at the boathouse parking lot. The marketplace will be set up along Tennis Court Road, beginning closest to the boathouse.

 

Tour & Kids Crafts at the Arboretum

About: Join the Pine Creek Land Conservation Trust for a 1 hour program that includes an introduction to the Arboretum’s history and restoration project. This will include a short walk (1/3 miles) including tree and wildflower identification, a demonstration of how large plants such as buckthorn are removed, and a scavenger hunt and art project for children!

Time: 12:00 – 1:00pm

Difficulty: Participants of all ages, sizes and abilities are welcome! Crafting for children.

Place: Participants can park along Wildwood Road next to the 8th Division Veterans Memorial/Demonstration Gardens  and meet at the Arboretum.

 

Mushroom Exploration

About: Look for and learn about the varieties of mushrooms found in the park with the Western PA Mushroom Club. Join us for this unique opportunity.

Time: 1:00 – 3:00PM

Place: Meet at the North Park Bike Terrain Park on South Ridge Road near Pie Traynor.

Bring: Please bring water and wear weather appropriate attire and closed toe shoes. 

 

Discovery Archery Courses

About: Join L.L. Bean for an Archery Discovery Course. We will provide an abbreviated introduction and provide all necessary equipment and instruction for participants. Participants must be 8 years old by the event. A parent or guardian must participate with anyone 14 years old and younger. Parents only joining to assist do not need to register.

Time: 1:30 – 2:30pm, 2:45 – 3:45pm, and 4:00 – 5:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Place: Participants can park and meet at the Archery range.

Bring: Please bring water and wear weather appropriate clothing and closed toe shoes.

Guided Meditation

About: Join us for a 60-minute guided meditation in the park with Ven. Dr. Barry Kerzin, personal physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. 

Time: 2:00 – 3:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner

Place: Participants can park and meet at Roosevelt Shelter and grove

Bring: If you prefer, please bring a mat, towel or blanket to sit or lay on as this will be held outside.

Love the Loop

About: Show your love for North Park’s most popular exercise feature, the 5.5-mile North Park Trail Loop! Come out and bike, rollerblade, run, walk, wheel, stroll, or however you prefer to move. You can complete a route of your own choosing- bike it twice, run or walk it once, or turn around at any point for an abbreviated route. Meet us at the start at 3:30 to participate and be sure and let us know how many times you go around so we can tally up our collective loops for the day. Anyone who posts their picture before, during or after their loop(s) can tag us on Instagram using #lovetheloopNP to be entered for a chance to win some great ACPF swag!

Time: 3:30 – 5:00pm

Difficulty: Beginner – Advanced

Place: Participants can park and meet at the North Park Boathouse Parking Lot.

Bring: Please bring any equipment, water and wear weather appropriate clothing and closed toe shoes.

Pour at the Park hosted by the Allegheny County Parks Foundation

About: The day will be capped with Pour at the Park, our annual fundraiser where you can try tastings from local breweries and food vendors while listening to live music! Tickets can be purchased at pouratthepark.com and benefit your county parks.

Time: 5:30 – 8:30PM

Place: Event at the North Park Lodge, with parking and shuttle pick up at the Ice Rink.
